Question 1

What's the difference between snaps, hooks and eyes, and buttons?

Accepted Answer

Snaps give a quick press-to-close hold and suit jackets, baby clothes, and bags. Hooks and eyes are low-profile and sit flat at necklines, cuffs, and the top of zippers. Buttons are decorative and adjustable but need a buttonhole or loop. For heavy fabric like denim or canvas, choose rivet-set jeans buttons or no-sew metal snaps over thread-sewn options.

Question 2

Do I need special tools to set rivets, snaps, and grommets?

Accepted Answer

Usually yes. Rivets, eyelets, grommets, and no-sew snaps install with a setter and a hammer or a hand press; many sets bundle a basic die, while pro-grade hardware sells the press separately for $25-$120. Sew-on snaps, buttons, and hooks and eyes need only a needle and thread. Check the listing for the cap and post length so the fastener matches your material thickness.

Question 3

What size buckle or grommet should I buy for a belt or strap?

Accepted Answer

Match the hardware to your strap width, not the buckle's overall size. A 1.5" belt needs a 1.5" buckle and grommets spaced about 1" apart; bag straps commonly use 1" or 1.25" hardware. Measure your webbing or leather, then confirm the inner bar width in the listing. Solid brass and stainless steel hold up best on items that see weather or daily wear.

Question 4

How much do craft closures and fasteners cost?

Accepted Answer

Most notions are inexpensive: snap packs, hooks and eyes, and basic buttons run $4-$15 for 10-50 pieces, while buckles and metal rivets land around $6-$20 a set. Specialty work—hand-cast brass buckles, antler or horn buttons, and laser-cut wood toggles—runs $10-$40. Buying bulk packs lowers the per-piece price for production sewing or repeat repairs.

Question 5

Which fasteners work best for leatherwork and bags?

Accepted Answer

Rivets, magnetic snaps, Sam Browne studs, and solid-brass buckles handle the stress leather and bags take. Use double-cap rivets to anchor straps and reinforce stress points, and line-24 snaps for closures. Pick brass or stainless over plated zinc so edges don't corrode where they meet oils and weather. Confirm the post length suits your leather thickness, typically 6-12mm for veg-tan.

Question 6

Are these closures sold individually or in packs?

Accepted Answer

Most shops sell in packs of 6, 10, 25, or 50 pieces, which keeps the per-unit cost low for repairs and small batches. Decorative buttons and statement buckles are often sold as singles or small sets. Check the quantity in the title, and whether matching washers, posts, or setting dies are included before ordering, since some hardware needs companion parts to install correctly.
