Which rivets do you need for leather and bags?
Pick the rivet by two numbers: cap diameter (how it looks on top) and post length (how thick a stack it can grip). Double-cap rivets are the workhorse for leather straps, wallets, and bag handles because both faces finish clean; rapid (single-cap) rivets back onto a flat washer and suit denim hems and webbing; solid copper rivets with burrs are the traditional choice for heavy harness and saddle work and need to be peened or set. For 3-4 oz veg-tan, look for a 6mm post; double up your leather or add hardware and you'll want 8-10mm. Common cap sizes run 7mm, 9mm, and 12mm. Finishes include solid brass, antique brass, gunmetal, nickel, and raw copper. Packs of 50-100 run about $6-$18; setters and a poly mat or hand press are $10-$40. Many makers ship in 3-7 business days; engraved or custom-finish rivets can take 1-3 weeks. Check whether a setting tool is included before you check out.
