Question 1

What's the difference between a twist lock, a push lock, and a magnetic snap?

Accepted Answer

A twist lock (turn lock) uses a rotating tab over a backplate for a firm, decorative hold on flap clutches and satchels. A push lock (tongue lock) clicks shut with a sprung button and reads more polished on structured bags. Magnetic snaps are the easiest to install and hide inside the flap, but give a softer grip. For a visible hardware accent, choose a twist or push lock; for an invisible everyday closure, use a magnetic snap.

Question 2

How do I size a kiss-lock frame for a coin purse or clutch?

Accepted Answer

Measure the finished top opening of your pouch and match it to the frame's width, not its height. Common sizes are 3" and 4" for coin purses, 6" for cosmetic clutches, and 8.5" for evening bags. Sewing-channel frames let you stitch the fabric in; glue-in frames need a thin bead of clear adhesive and cotton cord to wedge the seam tight. Buy the matching paper pattern when a maker offers it.

Question 3

Do purse locks need special tools to install?

Accepted Answer

Most do. Twist and push locks mount through punched slots, so you'll need a rotary or hole punch and often a small screwdriver for the backplate screws. Some plates have prongs you bend flat instead of screws. Magnetic snaps install through two slits with washer prongs and no tools beyond a seam ripper. Check the listing to confirm screws, washers, and a template are included before you buy.

Question 4

What are cord locks and stoppers used for?

Accepted Answer

Cord locks are the spring-loaded toggles that cinch a drawstring on bags, hoodies, and dry sacks; barrel and bell stoppers add a finished tip and keep cord ends from fraying. Match the lock's bore to your cord diameter, usually 4mm-6mm for paracord and hoodie drawstrings. Single-hole locks suit one cord; double-hole locks gather both sides of a waistband or backpack channel.

Question 5

How much does bag lock hardware cost?

Accepted Answer

Twist and push locks typically run $4-$12 each, with solid-brass and designer-style plates reaching $15-$30. Kiss-lock frames cost $5-$18 depending on width and finish, and bundled frame-plus-pattern sets run a little higher. Cord locks and stoppers are the cheapest, around $3-$10 for packs of 6-20. Buying multi-packs lowers the per-piece price if you make bags in small batches.

Question 6

Which lock finish holds up best on a bag used daily?

Accepted Answer

Solid brass and stainless steel resist tarnish and bending better than plated zinc, so they last longest on everyday totes and crossbody bags. Antique brass and gunmetal hide scuffs well; bright gold and nickel show wear faster at the contact edges. For weekend or decorative pieces, plated hardware is fine. Confirm the base metal in the listing, since 'gold-tone' usually means plated rather than solid.
