How do you pick the right metal stock?
Pick the alloy first. Sterling silver (.925) and Argentium hold fine detail and patina well but cost more; copper and brass are cheap and forgiving for practice and rustic work; aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel suit lightweight, hypoallergenic pieces. Match gauge to the job: 18-22 gauge sheet for stamped blanks and pendants, 16-20 gauge wire for ring shanks and ear wires, 24-28 gauge for wrapping and weaving. Sheet sells by the inch or square inch, wire by the foot or coil, casting grain and metal clay by the ounce or gram. Mind the temper, too: dead-soft wire bends by hand, half-hard holds a clasp's spring. Expect copper and brass around $1-$6 per foot, sterling wire $4-$30 by gauge, and small sterling sheet $15-$60. Many makers ship cut-to-order stock in 2-5 business days; specialty alloys or custom lengths can run 1-2 weeks.
