How do you pick the right drawing charcoal?
Start with the mark you want. Vine and willow charcoal are soft, gray, and easy to lift or blend, ideal for loose gesture work and underdrawing because they brush off the paper. Compressed charcoal, in sticks or blocks, packs more binder and pigment for deep, velvety blacks that resist smudging and won't erase as cleanly. Charcoal pencils give you a sharp, controllable point for eyes, hair, and fine line work; powdered charcoal covers large tonal grounds fast with a brush or chamois. Most makers grade sticks soft, medium, and hard, and softer reads darker. Hand-burned vine sets of 10-25 sticks run about $8-$20; compressed and pencil sets land near $12-$35; artisan willow in glass tubes or gift tins reaches $25-$60. Many makers ship in 3-7 business days; small-batch kiln-fired charcoal can take 1-2 weeks. Check stick length and diameter, and pair with toothy paper, a kneaded eraser, and fixative.
