Which sewing elastic should you actually buy?
Match the elastic to the job, not just the width. Braided elastic (the ridged kind) narrows when stretched and is best inside a casing for sleeves, necklines, and lightweight waistbands; knit elastic stays soft and flat, doesn't narrow, and can be sewn directly to fabric, so it suits underwear and kids' clothes. Woven (no-roll) elastic is firm and holds up on heavier waistbands and outerwear. For garments you'll resize later, buttonhole elastic lets you fine-tune the fit. Fold-over elastic (FOE) finishes raw edges on leggings, headbands, and bralettes in one pass; clear/swimwear elastic handles lycra and activewear. Common widths run 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1", and 2". Makers sell by the yard, in cut packs (3-10 yds), or on bulk spools of 25-144 yards. Expect roughly $1-$3 per yard for specialty trims and $8-$30 for a bulk spool. Many ship in 2-5 business days.
