How do you pick the right sewing thread?
Match thread fiber to your fabric: polyester all-purpose (around 40-50wt) handles knits, synthetics and everyday garment seams with a little stretch, while mercerized cotton suits quilting and pressing on natural-fiber cottons and linens. Look at weight before color — lower numbers are heavier and more visible (12wt-30wt for topstitching, hand quilting and visible mending; 50wt-60wt for piecing and fine seams). For sergers and overlockers, check listings for finer Tex 21-30 cones in 1,000-6,000 yard lengths, often sold in coordinated 4-cone sets. Specialty spools from makers include silk for tailoring and basting, waxed linen and bonded nylon for leather and bags, glow-in-the-dark and metallic for embellishment, and small-batch hand-dyed and variegated cotton for slow stitching. Typical spools run $3-$12; cones and curated color packs $15-$45. Many makers ship in 2-5 business days; hand-dyed batches may take 1-2 weeks.
Use the filters for fiber, weight, color and spool size, then tap a related search to narrow to quilting, serger or hand-stitch thread.
