How do you pick the right panel or art board?
Match the panel to your medium and how you'll hang the finished piece. Cradled wood panels (a birch or poplar face on a 0.75" to 2" deep frame) hang frame-free straight off the wall and stay flat for oils, acrylics, encaustic, and heavy palette-knife work. Flat hardboard and MDF boards are thinner and cheaper for studies and panels you plan to frame. Surface coating matters as much as the wood: gessobord takes acrylic and oil with no extra prep, while claybord and aquabord have an absorbent kaolin clay ground built for ink, watercolor, gouache, and pen work. For oils on raw wood, confirm the maker sealed it (with size or shellac) so oil can't rot the fibers. Common sizes run 5x7 up to 24x36; minis and panel packs are popular for daily studies. Expect roughly $6-$18 for small flat boards, $15-$60 for cradled panels, and a 0.75" deep cradle as the everyday standard. Stock panels usually ship in 3-7 business days; custom cuts and odd dimensions run 1-3 weeks.
