Which canvas should you buy for your project?
Canvas means very different things by craft, so match the weave to your technique. For counted cross-stitch, Aida comes by count (11, 14, 16, 18 holes per inch); lower counts give bigger, easier stitches. Needlepoint usually calls for mono or interlock canvas in 10-18 mesh, where you cover the whole surface. Plastic canvas (7, 10, or 14 ct) is rigid, so it holds a 3D shape for ornaments, tissue boxes, and coasters. Rug hooking, punch needle, and latch-hook want a stiff, wide-grid rug canvas (3.3-5 holes per inch) or monk's cloth. Painters can grab pre-stretched cotton or flat yardage to cut and mount. Budget roughly $4-$15 for pre-cut needlework pieces, $1-$4 per plastic sheet, and $15-$50 for stretched painting canvas; hand-primed linen costs more. Most makers cut and ship in 1-5 business days; custom sizes or hand-priming run 1-2 weeks. Always check the count or mesh, the edge finish (serged versus raw), and whether the piece is pre-primed.
