How do you pick the right instrument strap?
Buy for the instrument and the player's frame first. Heavy electric guitars and basses ride best on 2.5-3 inch leather or padded straps that spread weight across the shoulder; acoustic and folk players often reach for 2-inch woven cotton or jacquard webbing. Ukulele, mandolin, and banjo players want shorter cradle or button-and-tie straps cut for smaller bodies. Check the adjustment range (most cover roughly 38-58 inches) against shoulder height, and match the end tabs to the player's strap buttons, or look for a leather tie-lace if an acoustic has no heel button. Personalization is the whole point here: laser-engraved or embossed names, initials, band logos, and tour dates on the leather tail, or text woven into a fabric strap. Expect woven cotton at $20-$45, suede and split leather $40-$80, and hand-tooled full-grain $80-$180. Many makers ship blank straps in 3-7 business days; engraved and tooled pieces usually run 1-3 weeks, so order ahead of a birthday or recital.
