Question 1

How can I tell a real hand-pulled screenprint from a printed copy?

Accepted Answer

You can tell a hand-pulled screenprint by raised, opaque ink you can feel with a fingertip, flat blocks of solid color, and a stated color count like "4-color print." The artist pushes each ink through a mesh stencil one layer at a time, so registration is occasionally a hair off, a friendly sign it is handmade. Listings that name the inks, water-based or plastisol, and show an edition number are almost always genuine pulls, not digital reproductions.

Question 2

How much do screenprints cost as a gift?

Accepted Answer

Open-edition screenprints from independent artists usually run $25-$60, set by size and the number of colors. A signed, numbered limited edition typically lands at $50-$150 because each sheet is hand-pulled and the run is capped. Prints with metallic inks, split-fountain blends, or five-plus colors cost more, since every color is a separate pass through the press. Sought-after artist editions can climb past $200.

Question 3

What sizes do screenprints come in and will they fit a standard frame?

Accepted Answer

Most screenprints are pulled at poster sizes, with 18x24 and 24x36 the common large formats and 11x14 and 16x20 made for everyday wall display. The 11x14, 16x20, and 18x24 sizes drop into off-the-shelf frames; 24x36 usually needs a custom or framing-shop frame. Prints arrive unframed, shipped flat with backing board or rolled in a tube, so the recipient can pick a frame and mat that suit their space.

Question 4

What does a signed and numbered screenprint edition mean?

Accepted Answer

A numbered edition like 12/75 means only 75 sheets were pulled and this is the twelfth, each hand-signed by the artist. Once the run sells out, no more are printed, which gives it collectible value an open edition does not have. For a graphic-art lover or a milestone like a retirement or anniversary, a signed limited screenprint feels deliberate and tends to hold its worth over time.

Question 5

Are screenprint inks safe and durable on paper?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Screenprints use thick, lightfast inks, water-based acrylic or plastisol, that resist fading far better than dye-based posters and stay vivid for years away from direct sun. The ink sits on top of heavy uncoated stock, typically 80-100 lb cover, so colors look rich and saturated. For longevity, frame the print behind UV-protective glass and keep it out of strong sunlight, the same care you would give any art on paper.

Question 6

What occasions and recipients suit a screenprint gift?

Accepted Answer

Screenprints suit anyone who loves bold, graphic art, making them a strong birthday or holiday pick for a design-minded friend. A punchy abstract or city print works for housewarmings, and a signed numbered edition marks a retirement or anniversary. Their flat, modern color fits dorms, studios, and offices. Open editions often ship in 3-7 business days for last-minute gifting; fresh-pulled limited runs need 1-2 weeks, so order early.
