What should you look for in a gouache painting?
Gouache is opaque watercolor: chalky, fully saturated, and matte rather than glassy. That flat, poster-like surface is the whole appeal, so look at how the artist handles it. Even, velvety fields of color signal control; visible streaking or pinholing can mean thin paint. Most gouache is painted on cold- or hot-press watercolor paper or illustration board; hot-press shows crisper edges for botanical and illustration work, while cold-press adds tooth for looser landscapes. Because gouache re-wets and lifts, originals should ship flat or rolled in a tube, never folded, and need framing under glass or acrylic with a mat or spacer so paint never touches the glazing. Small studies (5x7 to 8x10) often run $30-$120; mid-size signed originals $120-$450; large or highly detailed work $450-$1,500+. Ready pieces usually ship in 3-7 business days; custom 1-3 weeks. Great for botanical, travel, and pet-portrait gifts.
