Question 1

How much does a custom pastel portrait cost?

Accepted Answer

A single-subject custom pastel portrait usually costs $90 to $300, depending on size and detail. Small 8x10 head-and-shoulders pieces start near $90-$140; detailed 11x14 or 16x20 work with rich backgrounds runs $200-$300 or more. Each additional person or pet adds roughly $40-$80, and full scenic backgrounds add similar. Pastel costs more than pencil because of the materials and hand-blending time, so confirm what the base listing includes.

Question 2

What's the difference between soft pastel and oil pastel?

Accepted Answer

Soft (chalk) pastel is pure powdered pigment in stick form — matte, velvety, and easy to blend into glowing, feathered transitions, ideal for skin, fur, and flowers. Oil pastel binds pigment with a wax-and-oil base, so it's denser and more saturated, with visible buttery strokes and a slight sheen. Soft pastel reads delicate and painterly; oil pastel looks bolder and more textured. Ask which the artist uses, since the finish differs noticeably.

Question 3

How do I keep a pastel artwork from smudging?

Accepted Answer

Frame it under glass with a mat, and never let the surface touch the glass. Pastel is loose pigment that sits on the paper's tooth, so it can smear if rubbed. Artists usually apply a light fixative and ship the piece flat between glassine sheets. Use a mat or spacer to hold the artwork off the glass, hang it away from direct sun, and avoid wiping the surface.

Question 4

Can I order a pastel portrait from a photo?

Accepted Answer

Yes — most pastel artists work from photos. Send the sharpest, best-lit reference you have, with the face large and in focus, since pastel rewards clear detail in eyes, hair, and fur. Note anything the photo can't show: true hair or eye color, a pet's markings, or an outfit. For multi-subject pieces, artists can often combine several photos into one composition placed on toned paper.

Question 5

How long does a custom pastel piece take to arrive?

Accepted Answer

Plan on 1-3 weeks for a hand-finished original, since the artist draws it after you order, then fixes and packs it flat to protect the surface. Detailed or multi-subject pieces can take longer. Lead times stretch near Mother's Day, Father's Day, and the December holidays, so message the artist early and ask about rush options if you need it by a set date.

Question 6

What occasions suit a pastel portrait best?

Accepted Answer

Pastel portraits shine for pet and family memorials, where soft color makes the piece feel warm rather than stark, and for Mother's Day, anniversaries, and milestone birthdays. The glowing skin tones suit baby and child portraits, while floral and landscape pastels make graceful housewarming or wedding gifts. Because each original is made to order, plan 1-3 weeks ahead for dated occasions.
