Question 1

How much does a custom pet portrait cost?

Accepted Answer

A digital pet portrait you print yourself typically costs $15-$50, while an original hand-painted watercolor, acrylic, or oil portrait runs $60-$300 or more depending on size, detail, and the artist's experience. Adding a second pet, a custom background, or a hand-lettered name usually adds $15-$40 per extra. Larger canvases (16x20 and up) sit at the top of the range.

Question 2

How long does a custom pet portrait take to make?

Accepted Answer

Digital illustrations are usually delivered as a file in 1-5 business days. Hand-painted originals take longer because the artist works from your photo by hand — typically 1-2 weeks for small watercolors and 2-4 weeks for larger oil or acrylic pieces, plus shipping. If you need it for a specific date, message the maker first; many offer rush options for an added fee.

Question 3

What photo works best for a pet portrait?

Accepted Answer

Use a clear, well-lit photo taken at your pet's eye level, with the face in focus and fur markings, eye color, and ears clearly visible. Natural daylight beats flash, which flattens detail and causes glare. Avoid heavily filtered, dark, or far-away shots. Most artists can combine two reference photos or gently fix a slightly soft image, but the sharper your source, the closer the likeness.

Question 4

Which pet portrait style should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Match the style to where it will hang and the mood you want. Soft watercolor suits memorials and gentle home decor; clean line art and minimalist portraits fit modern interiors; cartoon and pop-art styles read playful; and royal or Renaissance portraits — your pet in regal costume — make a fun gift. Look at each maker's gallery of past work, since the same named style varies widely between artists.

Question 5

Can I get a memorial portrait of a pet that has passed?

Accepted Answer

Yes — memorial pet portraits are one of the most common commissions, and many artists specialize in them. Send the best photo you have, even an older or lower-resolution one, and explain it's a memorial so the maker can take extra care matching color and expression. Some offer angel wings, a halo, or a name-and-date inscription. Reach out before ordering to confirm they can work from your specific photo.

Question 6

Can one portrait include multiple pets?

Accepted Answer

Most artists can combine two or more pets into a single piece, even from separate photos taken at different times. Expect to pay an added fee per additional pet — commonly $15-$40 each — and to provide a clear reference photo for every animal. Check the listing's options or message the maker, since composing multiple subjects takes more time and may extend the lead time.
