How do you choose a vintage telephone as a gift?
Decide first whether the phone is meant to ring or just to sit pretty. A working gift needs to match the recipient's setup: most landlines and adapters now use an RJ11 jack, so a 1960s-70s rotary phone usually needs to be rewired, and pulse-dialing models won't reach automated menus without a pulse-to-tone converter. Decor-only handsets skip all that. Watch the era and style: Western Electric model 500 desk phones and 302 "Lucille Ball" sets, candlestick replicas, bright princess phones, and Bakelite-look reproductions each read very differently in a room. Restored originals run roughly $60-$220 depending on condition and rewiring; faithful retro reproductions land near $30-$90, and novelty or banana-shaped handsets sit under $40. Ask the maker what was replaced (cord, ringer, dial card) and whether the bell actually rings. Many ship in 3-7 business days; full restorations and custom color refinishes often need 1-3 weeks.
