How do you choose a workbench as a gift?
Start with the craft and the body. A jeweler wants a tall bench (about 36-39 inches) with a cut-out belly notch and a bench pin; a woodworker needs a thick, flat hardwood top with a vise and dog holes; a solderer or electronics tinkerer needs a heat-tolerant surface and an outlet strip. Measure the studio doorway and the wall the bench will sit against before buying anything freestanding. Check the listed worktop thickness (1.5-2 inches of maple or beech resists denting), the load rating, and whether legs are bolted or knock-down for shipping. Many maker benches add a pegboard or slat back, a lower shelf, and one or two drawers. Tabletop and folding benches run about $80-$200; standing hardwood benches with a vise land at $250-$600; built-to-order studio benches with drawers and electrical reach $700-$1,500+. In-stock benches often ship in 1-2 weeks; custom builds run 3-6 weeks and frequently ship freight.
