Which embroidery hoop should you actually buy?
Match the hoop to the job, not just the size of your design. Wooden screw-tension hoops in beech or bamboo are the workhorse: they grip fabric firmly, loosen for repositioning, and double as a ready-to-hang display frame once you trim and lace the back. Spring-tension hoops (the metal-ring kind) snap fabric flat fast and suit machine embroidery and quick punch-needle work, but they crease delicate linen. Flexi-hoops with a soft inner ring and a colored plastic outer rim finish hoop art cleanly. Size by adding 1-2 inches around your motif; 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 inches cover most cross-stitch and hand embroidery, with 10-12 inch hoops for samplers. Look for a smooth-turning brass screw, no inner-ring burrs, and the option of no-slip binding tape. Expect $4-$12 for a plain working hoop, $12-$30 for stained, painted or engraved display hoops, and $20-$45 for hardwood or large sizes.
Use the size and material filters to match your fabric and design, then check related searches for spring hoops, bamboo rings and finished hoop-art options.
