How do you pick the right fabric by the yard?
Start with the fiber and weight your project needs, because that decides how the cloth drapes, washes, and sews. Quilting cotton is the workhorse: stable, around 44 inches wide, and easy to piece into totes, pillow covers, and beginner garments. For clothes that move, read the weight in GSM or ounces. Voile and double gauze (roughly 60-100 GSM) suit baby clothes and summer dresses; mid-weight linen and chambray (130-200 GSM) handle shirts, skirts, and napkins; canvas and denim (200 GSM and up) hold structure for bags and aprons. Knit sewists want cotton jersey or French terry with a listed stretch percentage. Yardage runs 44 or 60 inches wide; fat quarters are about 18 x 22 inches. Prewash natural fibers, since cotton and linen shrink 2-5%, and buy from one dye lot. Plan on $4-$15 a fat quarter and $8-$30 a yard, with hand-dyed and designer prints higher. Most makers cut and ship in 3-7 business days; hand-dyed runs take 1-3 weeks.
