Question 1

How do I know what size doll clothes to buy?

Accepted Answer

Match the doll's body measurements, not just its height. Common standards are 18-inch (American Girl), 14.5-inch (Wellie Wishers), Blythe and Pullip, 1/6 and 1/3 BJDs, and 11.5-inch fashion dolls like Barbie. Sellers list garments by inch size or doll line, so compare chest, waist, and inseam, since two same-height dolls can differ in bust and hip width. When unsure, message the maker your doll's exact model name.

Question 2

What fabrics work best at doll scale?

Accepted Answer

Lightweight, fine-weave fabrics drape most believably on small bodies. Cotton lawn, voile, knit jersey, fine wool, and silk move naturally, while heavy quilting cotton looks stiff and bulky at doll scale. For closures, snaps and hook-and-eye sit flatter than Velcro, which can snag mohair wigs and fuzzy fabrics. Hand-finished seams and bias-bound edges signal a maker who understands miniature tailoring rather than scaled-down craft-store patterns.

Question 3

How much do handmade doll clothes and accessories cost?

Accepted Answer

Simple separates like tops, skirts, and leggings run $8-$25. Tailored dresses, coats, and coordinated sets are usually $25-$90. Specialty pieces cost more: hand-knotted mohair or alpaca wigs and full BJD outfits range $40-$150 and up. Price tracks fabric quality, hand-finishing, and whether the item is stock or made-to-measure for your specific doll, with custom-dyed fabric and beadwork pushing toward the top of each band.

Question 4

Can doll outfits be customized or made to measure?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many makers offer made-to-measure tailoring, custom fabrics, embroidery, monogramming, and color matching, especially for BJDs and Blythe where fit is exacting. Send your doll's model name and measurements, plus any reference photos. Custom and hand-dyed work usually adds 1-3 weeks to turnaround versus 3-7 business days for in-stock pieces, so order early for birthdays or holidays to leave room for revisions.

Question 5

What accessories pair with doll clothing?

Accepted Answer

Beyond garments, makers offer mohair and alpaca wigs, leather-look shoes and boots, hats, scarves, tiny handbags, jewelry, and resin or polymer-clay props like books and food. For 18-inch and play dolls, bedding, backpacks, and pet figures are popular add-ons. Match wig cap size and shoe length to your doll line before buying, since these vary even among dolls of the same height.

Question 6

What makes a good doll-clothes gift?

Accepted Answer

For a child, a sturdy 18-inch outfit with easy snap closures plus a small accessory like shoes or a hat is a reliable hit. For collectors and BJD or Blythe hobbyists, a hand-tailored ensemble or a custom mohair wig feels personal and shows you know their doll. Ask which doll line they own first, because sizing is the difference between a piece they display and one that never fits.
