How do you pick a good henna gift?
With pure henna the whole game is dye content, and that comes down to the crop. Look for body-art-quality (BAQ) powder milled from a recent harvest with a stated crop year, finely sifted so it rinses out cleanly, and one botanical name on the label: Lawsonia inermis, nothing else. Sift quality matters as much as origin; Rajasthani and Yemeni lawsone-rich crops are the ones makers brag about. Henna only deposits, never lifts, so it reads coppery-red on light or gray hair and a warm translucent tint on dark. For brown to near-black, choose a henna-indigo blend or a two-box system. Steer clear of "black henna" and compound henna; real henna is never black and should be PPD- and metallic-salt-free. On price, a 100g BAQ packet runs $8-$20, a henna-indigo brown blend $15-$35, ready-to-use cones $6-$15, and a full kit with gloves, bowl, applicator, and cap $30-$60. Many makers ship sealed powder in 3-7 business days; freshly milled or custom blends take 1-2 weeks.
