Question 1

What is the best material for a luggage tag?

Accepted Answer

Full-grain or vegetable-tanned leather is the most popular gift material because it embosses initials cleanly and ages well, running $18-$45. For durability over looks, aircraft-grade aluminum and acrylic tags shrug off rain, bins, and scuffs ($12-$30) and come in bright colors that are easy to spot. Silicone and rubber tags ($6-$18) are the toughest and cheapest, best for kids, sports bags, and matching family sets.

Question 2

Should a luggage tag show your home address?

Accepted Answer

No, keep your home address off the front. Choose a tag with a covered slip-in window or a snap flap so contact details stay hidden until someone needs them, and put a cell number or email on the back instead of a street address. The front should show only a name or monogram. This keeps a checked bag easy to claim at the carousel without advertising an empty house to strangers in the terminal.

Question 3

How much do personalized luggage tags cost?

Accepted Answer

Most fall between $6 and $45 each. Plan on roughly $6-$18 for silicone, rubber, or acrylic tags, $12-$30 for stamped or laser-engraved metal, and $18-$45 for personalized full-grain leather. Hand-tooled or hand-stitched leather sits at the top of the range. For weddings, reunions, or corporate events, bulk favor sets often drop to $3-$7 per tag when you order a dozen or more.

Question 4

What makes a good luggage tag for a wedding favor?

Accepted Answer

For favors, order matching bulk sets in acrylic, faux leather, or PVC, often $3-$7 each by the dozen, with the couple's names or a destination-wedding date printed or engraved. Look for makers who include a guest-name option, ribbon or color choices, and a covered window so guests can add their own details. These double as a practical keepsake for destination weddings, bachelorette trips, and family reunions, unlike favors that get tossed.

Question 5

Why do luggage tag straps break, and what should I look for?

Accepted Answer

Cheap tags fail at the strap, where a thin leather loop or plastic buckle cracks against conveyor belts and overhead bins. Look for a riveted leather strap, a sturdy metal buckle, or a steel cable loop, which outlasts everything on rough-handled checked bags. Some makers offer a screw-down ID frame or a self-locking nylon loop. For a tag that travels constantly, stainless steel cable plus a metal or thick leather body is the most failure-proof combination.

Question 6

What is a good luggage tag gift for a frequent traveler?

Accepted Answer

A monogrammed full-grain leather tag with a riveted strap and a covered address window is the standout gift, usually $18-$45. Pair it with a matching passport cover for a set under $50. For travelers who check bags often, a bright acrylic or aluminum tag is easier to spot on the carousel. Personalized tags suit graduations, retirements, honeymoons, and anyone heading off on a first big trip.
