Question 1

What is the difference between tatting, bobbin lace, and crochet lace?

Accepted Answer

Tatting ties thread into knotted rings and chains using a shuttle or needle, giving a firm, beaded-looking lace that suits snowflakes, edgings, and jewelry. Bobbin lace is woven from many threads on a pillow, producing fine, flowing patterns that take the most hours and cost the most. Crochet and Irish lace use a hook, so they work up faster and softer into doilies and collars. Check the listing photos and stated method to know what you are getting.

Question 2

What thread is used and does the weight matter?

Accepted Answer

Most tatting and lace use mercerized cotton thread, sized by number where a higher number is finer: size 80 is gossamer heirloom work, size 20 to 40 is the common middle ground, and size 10 makes sturdier pieces like bookmarks and ornaments. Finer thread means more stitches per inch, more hours, and a higher price. Some makers also tat in silk or add seed beads and pearls for bridal and jewelry pieces.

Question 3

How much does handmade tatting and lace cost?

Accepted Answer

Plan on roughly $12-$40 for tatted earrings, pendants, bookmarks, and snowflake ornaments, $25-$90 for doilies, coasters, and lace collars, and $80-$300+ for bridal veils, christening sets, and large bobbin-lace panels. Price tracks thread fineness, finished size, and hours of handwork. A size-80 doily or a beaded veil takes many more hours than a quick size-10 motif, so the gap reflects labor, not markup.

Question 4

Can tatting and lace pieces be personalized?

Accepted Answer

Yes, within the limits of the craft. Makers commonly work a single initial or small motif into a doily, stitch a wedding date onto a keepsake card behind framed lace, or match thread color to a wedding or nursery palette. Fine lettering is hard in lace itself, so names usually appear on a mounting or tag rather than knotted in. Personalization adds about $10-$30 and lengthens the timeline, so confirm your deadline first.

Question 5

How long does made-to-order lace take to ship?

Accepted Answer

Ready-made ornaments, bookmarks, earrings, and small doilies usually ship in 3-7 business days. Custom edgings, lace collars, and personalized pieces typically take 2-4 weeks, and bridal veils, large bobbin-lace panels, or full christening sets can run 4-8 weeks because every inch is worked by hand. Order at least a month ahead for weddings, christenings, and December gifts, and message the maker first if you have a hard date.

Question 6

Which occasions suit tatting and lace gifts best?

Accepted Answer

Lace suits weddings and anniversaries (tatted veils, lace garters, date keepsakes, handkerchief edgings), christenings and new babies (heirloom bonnets and blankets), and the holidays (framed snowflake ornaments and tree lace). Doilies and edged linens make warm housewarming and Mother's Day gifts, while tatted earrings and bookmarks are affordable keepsakes for crafters and readers. Because lace is delicate and lasting, it reads as an heirloom rather than a throwaway.
