Question 1

What width necktie should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Pick width to match the suit lapel and your build. Classic handmade ties measure about 3 to 3.25 inches at the widest point and flatter most jackets and frames. Slim 2.5-inch ties look modern with narrow lapels and trimmer suits, while a sub-2.5-inch tie reads very fashion-forward. As a rule, the tie blade should roughly mirror the lapel width for a balanced look.

Question 2

What is a grenadine tie and why does it cost more?

Accepted Answer

Grenadine is silk woven on a leno (gauze) loom, giving a textured, matte finish with no shiny sheen. The two main weaves are garza fina (fine) and garza grossa (open and chunky). Authentic grenadine is woven in Como, Italy, and the labor-intensive weave plus hand finishing pushes prices to roughly $75-$150 versus $35-$75 for standard woven silk.

Question 3

Can I get a necktie personalized with a name or monogram?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many makers embroider a name, initials, monogram, wedding date, or short message on the tie's back blade or keeper loop, usually for an extra $5-$15. This is the most popular option for groomsmen, fathers, and graduates. Embroidery adds production time, so personalized ties typically ship in 1-3 weeks rather than the few days for in-stock styles.

Question 4

How do I order matching ties for a wedding party?

Accepted Answer

Choose a maker who offers dye-lot or batch matching so all ties come from the same fabric run; colors can vary slightly across separate orders. Confirm the exact shade with a swatch photo, order all groomsmen ties together, and place the order 3-6 weeks out. Group and custom-color sets often run 1-3 weeks in production before shipping.

Question 5

What's the difference between knit and woven silk ties?

Accepted Answer

Knit ties are made from looped yarn (silk, wool, or cotton), giving a stretchy, textured body and often a flat, squared bottom instead of a pointed tip. They suit casual and smart-casual outfits. Woven silk ties have a smooth or jacquard face, a pointed tip, and a dressier drape that works for offices and formal events. Knits typically run $35-$75.

Question 6

How do I care for a handmade silk tie?

Accepted Answer

Never machine wash or iron silk directly. Untie the knot fully after each wear and hang or roll the tie to release wrinkles overnight. Blot spills immediately and take stains to a specialist; spot-cleaning at home can ring the silk. Stored rolled or hung loosely, a well-made hand-stitched tie keeps its shape and drape for many years.
