Crown shape sets the look: the fedora (teardrop) is the classic, the optimo has a raised center ridge, and the planter/Montecruz sits taller with a wide brim for sun. Boaters are different animals — stiff, flat-topped, flat-brimmed sennit or coarse straw with a grosgrain ribbon band, built for summer regattas, derby days, and barbershop-quartet looks. Check brim width (2.5" boater vs. 3-4" planter), the inner sweatband (leather wears best), and whether it ships rollable (true finos coil into a travel tube). Personalization is usually the band, a stamped leather patch, or initials. Many makers ship stock blocks in 3-7 business days; custom-blocked or sized hats run 1-3 weeks.
