How do you choose a costume prosthetic?
A prosthetic is the piece that sells a character at arm's length: a sliced-open gash, a pointed elf ear, a witch's hooked nose, a brow ridge that reshapes your whole face. Start with the material. Foam latex is light, flexible, and budget-friendly but needs adhesive and works best on dry skin; encapsulated silicone (often sold as a transfer) reads translucent and skin-real on camera and holds up to sweat. Then check the edges. The best appliances are cast with thin flashing, so you melt the seam down with a little adhesive instead of caking on filler. Most pieces ship unpainted or lightly pre-painted, so plan on a small kit: spirit gum or pros-aide, a remover, and a few cream colors. Single small wounds and gashes run $8-$25; ears, noses, and fang sets $15-$45; full foam-latex character faces or chest plates $40-$150. Many stock pieces ship in 3-7 business days, while custom-sculpted or skin-matched silicone runs 1-3 weeks, so order ahead of a shoot or convention.
Filter by material (foam latex vs. silicone), face zone, and whether adhesive is included, and use the related searches to jump to wounds, ears, or fang styles.
